Summary of the DISABKIDS Instruments

The DISABKIDS instruments have been translated and adapted for use in several languages and can be applied by clinicians, researchers, pharmaceutical companies, health care providers, and government agencies to:

 

  • document the HRQoL of children and adolescents,
  • describe the impact of a disease or treatment on the child's well-being,
  • assess pediatric health outcome measures for use in health economic research,
  • give parents and children a voice in health care.

 

The instruments are available as self- or proxy report forms in paper/ pencil or computer versions. The DISABKIDS instrument tool set includes the following modules:

 

  • DISABKIDS Chronic Generic Measure – long form (DCGM-37)
  • DISABKIDS Chronic Generic Measure – short form (DCGM-12)
  • DISABKIDS Smiley Measure
  • Condition-specific modules for asthma, arthritis, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, dermatitis, diabetes, and epilepsy.

 

In all, the DISABKIDS instruments are part of an instrument family which is a highly flexible assessment device that can be used to assess patients with any type of chronic medical condition, but which has specific modules for a deeper assessment of some of the most commonly encountered childhood chronic conditions. It is also usable for children between the ages of 4 to 16 years. Compatible proxy and child version are available for the whole age range which allows greater flexibility where a child may not be able to complete the older age version. There is also greater flexibility in that the instruments are available in all the major European languages. In summary, the DISABKIDS instruments:

 

  • cover a wide range of application possibilities,
  • are developmentally appropriate,
  • are reliable, valid and sensitive in terms of psychometric criteria,
  • are translated into multiple languages, and
  • are quick to complete and easy to score as well as to interpret.
